Although patients expect that they will need to replace their breast implants after 10 to 20 years, there are various reasons why they may need to be replaced sooner. If your beast augmentation surgery didn’t deliver the natural looking results you desired, if you are experiencing complications with your implants, or you have noticed your natural breast skin aging and sagging, a breast implant revision can help.
Here are some common signs that you may need a breast implant revision:
Your breast implants are causing discomfort or pain
Painful or uncomfortable implants can suggest a number of issues that require revision, such as capsular contracture , damaged lymph nodes, a developing seroma, pinched nerves, or poor implant placement. If you have silicone implants, pain may be an indication that your implant has ruptured or is leaking. Even if there is no serious issue causing the pain, some patients find that they are experiencing discomfort to the point that it is disrupting their daily lives, therefore they should schedule an appointment with their surgeon to find a solution.
Your breast implant has changed shape
The shape of your implant can change if the implant ruptures, shifts, rotates, bottoms out, or otherwise becomes displaced. Changes in the implant shape usually occur asymmetrically, meaning one breast may look different to the other. This asymmetry is not a medical risk; however, it can cause patients distress, and makes it very hard to find bras and clothes that fit properly.
Your breast implant is causing capsular contracture
In some cases, the body may mistake the implant for a dangerous foreign object and creates excessive amounts of scar tissue to isolate it. This is known as capsular contracture. The overproduction of dense, hard tissue around the breast implant can affect the success of the augmentation procedure.
Your breast implant has ruptured
Implant rupture can be caused by abrupt or intense physical pressure, or through the aging and weakening of the implant shell. A rupture in a saline implant causes an immediate deflation, making it easy to diagnose. The saline solution inside the implant is the same as IV solution, meaning it is easily absorbed by the body. By distinction, raptures in silicone implants cannot be diagnosed without an ultrasound or an MRI as the viscous silicone gel inside the implant leaks out slowly. Although the rapture of a breast implant is not life threatening, it is important to have the damaged implant removed to prevent inflammation or the development of excessive internal scar tissue.
You’re unhappy with your breast size
While most patients are happy with their results, some find that they wish they had gotten a different size of implant, whether it be smaller or larger. If you desire a change, most doctors will recommend waiting a year after your initial surgery before proceeding. This is waiting period will allow your body to heal completely and will also give your implants time to settle into their final position before you make this major decision.
